Our Staff
Stacey Ward Kelly, Founder, Director and Instructor
Stacey is a professional photographer, visual artist and creative writer who has nine years teaching experience in
the visual arts. She holds an M.Ed. in Art Education from Lesley University and has received studio art instruction
from the Art Institute of Boston and the Lorenzo de Medici Art Institute of Florence, Italy. In addition to her
teaching visual arts and photography, Stacey founded and facilitated a writing group in Oakland, CA, and has
taught summer programs and online courses in creative writing. As an artist, Stacey has exhibited her
photography in San Francisco, Boston and New York including the Howland Cultural Center in Beacon.

The Art Room staff includes art educators with advanced degrees and many years of teaching experience.
The Art Room offers classes and workshops to kids and adults in visual art, photography and creative writing in
Beacon, New York, which is situated in the heart of the Hudson Valley, just one hour north of New York City.

Our Location The Art Room holds classes and workshops at various locations in Beacon, New York, including the Howland Cultural Center, Beacon Art Supply (art store) and artist studios.
You will be notified of your class’ location at the time of your registration.

ADULT CLASSES (including mature teens)
Developing the Artist Within (5 week class) $120* Plus $10 materials fee
Each week we will explore a different avenue of your creativity. We’ll begin with some thoughtful and reflective writing assignments
and explore a wide range of art mediums including book making, watercolor painting, mixed media collage and clay sculpture. We’
ll discuss sacred art and architecture and connect what we explore each week to our own awareness as artists. Each class is
designed to encourage you while providing inspiration and a space to create. No studio art experience necessary.
The Artist Within Continues: Studio Art Class (5 week class) $120* Plus $10 materials fee
For those who have taken the above class or any beginning studio art class and want to delve a little more into various mediums.
We’ll continue to explore the art of sacred objects and use art journals to connect our explorations to our personal strengths and
interests.
Watercolor for Beginners (5 week class) $120
Learn basic techniques such as color mixing, washes and dry brush. Instruction will focus on painting with shape and capturing the
essence of the still life object. No experience necessary.
Watercolor Studio (5 week class) $120
For those who’ve taken at least one beginner class. Each week we’ll work with a different still life object or landscape image you
bring from home. Paint at your own pace and get feedback, guidance and demonstrations.
Going Digital Photo: A to Z (5 week class) $120
This class will teach you all you need to know about the art of digital photography. You’ll get comfortable with the anatomy and
functions of your camera, learn how to take powerful images and figure out the best ways to store, edit and print your photos. A brief
overview of digital imaging software will also be covered. A laptop is recommended but not required for this class.
Going Digital Video: A to Z (5 week class) $120
Once you understand the technology and functions of your digital camcorder you can get the most out of home videos and beyond.
We’ll cover shooting skills including lighting and composition and give you an overview of editing techniques.
Developing the Writer Within I (6 week class) $110
This is a beginner class in creative writing designed to inspire your creative expression through a variety of exercises. Process is
encouraged over product. We will tackle your creative blocks and begin with some easy self-reflective exercises. By the end of the
course you’ll take away a series of short writing pieces.
Developing the Writer Within II (6 week class) $110
This class is designed for writers who have completed at leas a first draft of a work they’d like to explore and get feedback on. Short
story, novella, novel and memoir writers welcome. We’ll review works in progress each week and you’ll get prompts and
assignments geared toward developing your craft as a writer.
Introduction to Travel Writing (5 week class) $95
Through readings, written assignments and individual critiques we’ll work toward composing compelling and engaging travel
narratives. Improve all of the skills necessary to succeed in this genre - dramatic scenes, character sketches, concrete detail, point
of view, and scene by scene construction.
From Journal to Memoir (5 week class) $95
Turn your journal writing into a memoir through encouragement, skillful guidance and sound, practical advice. We’ll begin with
personal narratives and mold your work into memoir form.
ADULT WORKSHOPS
The Art of Travel Photography (1 day workshop - 3hrs) $75
Take this workshop before your next trip and learn how to see the world through the eyes of an artist. Learn how to take great
photos, what film or equipment travels well and where to get high-quality images printed when you come home.
Going Digital: Photo Basics (1 day workshop - 3hrs) $75
Catch the new wave of digital photography and learn some great tips from a pro in this one-day workshop. You’ll learn the main
features of your camera and get some great and inexpensive ways to print your photos.
Going Digital: Video Basics (1 day workshop - 3hrs) $75
Get to know the functions of your digital camcorder so you can start capturing your favorite events, projects and travel. We’ll show
you all the basic skills you need to get started right away.
Capturing the Season: Fall, Winter or Spring (1 day workshop - 3hrs) $75
We will combine a lecture & outdoor field trip to show you how to capture the essence of nature, landscape and the light and colors
of each season. All levels welcome. Bring your camera.
Altered Books (1 day workshop - 3hrs) $45* Plus *15 materials fee
Discover the art of turning old books into new works of art. We'll cover a variety of basic page altering techniques such as collage,
sewing, window pages, text, and art journaling. Bring one discarded book preferably hardcover (new or old, any theme), photos, and
other ephemera you’d like to work with.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SERIES FOR K-12 EDUCATORS
This series is designed for K-12 educators in visual art and other subject areas. Learn how to incorporate the arts while providing
stimulating lessons that engage students and cover cross-curriculum standards in visual arts, language arts and social sciences.
Discovering Pompeii: The Art, History & Culture of a People (1.5 hour lecture) $35
Uncovering the buried city of Pompei has given us the best means to study the legacy of Roman art and architecture. This lecture
will give educators a series of lessons which will use art, writing and drama activities that will give students a better understanding
of the art, history and culture of the Romans.
The Book of Kells Illuminated Manuscript (1.5 hour lecture) $35
The history of this illuminated text includes information about the Celts and their focus on nature. The art of symbols, pattern and
design will be discussed in lesson plans that allow for students to make a personal connection by creating their own letter design
rich in symbolism.
The Art of Installation: Modern & Contemporary (1.5 hour lecture) $35
Installation art includes a wide range of modern and contemporary artists. This workshop will introduce some works currently on
view at Dia:Beacon and elsewhere. A unit plan will be reviewed that will inspire and engage students to create their own works of
installation art.
ADULT RETREATS

Using various yoga postures, breathing techniques and meditations and utilizing exercises in writing, clay sculpture, painting and
mixed media, we will tap into and develop the creative spirit within each of us. Whether you are a beginner or have many years
experience in yoga or the arts, this retreat will provide a safe and encouraging environment for you to connect to your creative core
and explore many different aspects of your creativity.
KIDS CLASSES
Calligraphy: Illuminated Letters (3 week class) $36
Design your own initials or your full name in beautiful lettering using antique styles of calligraphy and illuminated manuscripts.
Cartooning (4 week class) $48
You don’t need to have the best drawing skills to create fun and exciting cartoons; you just need some basic tips, a good story and
the right tools. We’ll start off with easy to do sketches and finish with a cartoon booklet in full color!
Creative Writing Mixed Bag (4 week class) $48
Group stories, fun poetry, adventure writing and creating your own story board game will be covered in this class.
Mystery Writing (4 week class) $48
Spooky tales, twists and turns and the ever-popular surprise ending will be some of the ways you’ll learn to write yourself a great
mystery.
KIDS WORKSHOPS
Cartooning (1 day workshop) 2 hrs $20
You don’t need to have the best drawing skills to create fun and exciting cartoons; you just need some basic tips, a good story and
the right tools. We’ll start off with easy to do sketches and finish with a cartoon booklet in full color!
Block Printing (1 day workshop) 2 hrs $20
Etch creative designs into foam and print your beautiful work of art in exciting print colors. No drawing skills necessary.
Glass Painting (1 day workshop) 2 hrs $20
From candleholders to flower vases: Create one-of-a-kind glass objects using non-toxic glass paint.
Venetian Mask Making (1 day workshop) 2 hrs $20
In this workshop you’ll learn the art of paper maché masks and make two masks to decorate with gold and silver paints, fabric &
feathers.
Magic Bag of Tricks (1 day workshop) 2 hrs $20
Every magician needs his or her own bag of tricks. Create your own trick bag and magic wand and learn the art of performing other
tricks.

The following is a list of classes and workshops for adults (including mature teens) and children ages
5-12 that are available to be taught privately to groups of six to twelve students. Class location will
depend upon class size and can include private homes, art studios and the Howland Cultural Center. To
